Dry Moon Eclipse Windmill Weight
"Eclipse" "A13" crescent moon windmill governor weight made by Fairbanks, Morris and Company of Chicago, Illinois, circe 1900. This form is referred to as the "Dry Moon" model because as used on the windmill, it pointed downward causing the rain water to roll off the top curve. Superstitious farmers felt it brought on droughts. Under some pressure from farmers, the manufacturers turned the crescent around on the next model so rain water would be held in the crescent, thereby creating the "Wet Moon" model which appealed more to the farmer customers for their windmills. 10" point to point and 6 3/4" high. Mounted on a contemporary base.
