These paintings were done in 1970 by Wesley L. Wing, then an inmate in a prison most likely in Illinois. There are reference stamps from the prison identifying Wing as an inmate with his name and serial number. One of the paintings (fisherman) has a label with the name Mrs. Harold L. Wing and her address in Owawa. IL. with the prison stamp and information whited out. She is likely Wesley's mother and the painting was a gift. Very accomplished work.

African American Folk Art Painting

A wonderful masterwork of African American Folk Art that visually and emotionally captures the tragic separation of black and white school children in out country in the mid 20th C.
This instropective and thoughtful painting was painted by "SAMATHA" and is dated "1958", just at the height of America's school integration struggle. Samatha was not a trained artist, but used her experiences, imagination and natural artistic ability to create her folk art statement.

The scene is cleverly and delightfully composed with great colorful details all across the canvas. It is set in an idyllic village school yard with the white children playing ing their school grounds with kites and games. In contrast, the black children are outside the fence with only the ability to look on and wonder.
From studying the "story" of the painting and the detailed images, we believe the artist, "Samantha", has carefully included herself at the lower center of her painting. You can almost feel her wishing she could cross the fence and join the fun. She has truly captured the moment in this most personal work.
This special painting is in its untouched original state - no damage or repairs, no in-painting and never cleaned. If cleaned the images would be much brighter in color.
The family came to America (2nd entry) with Philip and Sarah Thomas (1640-1686). The subsequent generations are shown in great detail. The Family Tree was done and signed by T.P. Handy (Thomas P Handy) who was a family member and is represented on the tree. The Family Tree is accented by some nice additional pen and watercolor work. The Thomas Family is thought to be from PA or perhaps MD. The size is most impressive and the condition is very nice. Probably mid 19th C. with a newer frame.
The material of the rug is a very unusual mixture of natural and dyed jute as well as the traditional hooking cotton. The combination of materials along with its design and its fine original condition make for a desireable piece of folk art. Found in a Vermont collection. Rug is 17.25" x 34.5".
