Body is heavy cast brass.  The compass card and glass are original.  A later printed portrait of a young military man has been mounted on the inside of the top.  Probably English origin based on compass point letters.  Nice large original example.  Excellent patina.<br />

No damage.  The sailor bank was made by the Hubley Co.<br />

Very well carved with a detailed wreath/band of leaves around the rim, carved scrolls along bottom and sides and finished at center with a well formed American shield with 13 carved stars and 7 inlaid bars.  Crisp, sharp carving, nice worn patina, and lightly smoked.  Circa early/mid 1860's.  Excellent original condition.  Displayed on a steel mount.<br />

This is likely a presentation piece for a man identified as &quot;M.M.Sr&quot; and dated &quot;1809&quot; in the elaborately engraved and pierced brass decoration riveted to the iron trivet body.  The very fancy long turned handle is also noteworthy.  Perhaps M.M.Sr was a successful tailor and this was a special gift to him (?).  Excellent original conditiion with no losses or repairs.<br />
