NWC Pewter Feast Spoon

Very large and unusual 19th C. feast ladle made of pewter (bowl, eye inlays, beak decoration), copper(portion of bowl) and wood. The copper backing for the bowl is riveted to the pewter bowl with 12 copper rivets and another to connect the bowl to the wood handle. Carved wood handle with large carved face and bird with long beak that sets into the handle. Overall 14" long, pewter bowl is 6 1/2", wood handle is 10", beak 2 3/8". From an old Seatlle collection of Northwest Coast decorative arts.

Pacific Northwest Kwakiutl Mask

Fine old Pacific Northwest Coast Kwakiutl Indian Ceremonial Dance Mask attributed to master carver Jack James (1902-1980). Attribution based on comparisons to known masks and we believe this mask to be from his earlier work, c. 1935. Jack James was a contemporary of Willie Seaweed, a very respected carver of masks. This mask represents Bookwus or Wild Man of the Woods. Reference - Art of the Kwakiutl Indians by Audrey Hawthorn, pgs 291-296 for similar examples. The mask is carved from red cedar and retains its dance rigging and original natural hair pegged into the mask. It is painted in its original pigments that have aged to s soft patina. It is in fine original condition with normal paint wear. The size is 13" x 9" and 8 1/2" deep. Acquired from a Seattle, WA collection.

19th C. Northwest Coast Native American carved food bowl in the shape of a native halibut. Beautifully carved bowl with the halibut supported on a raised pedestal form. Well carved details with abalone inlayed eyes and original painted accents (yellow, black and red). Excellent original condition with a nice old worn patina. The wood is cedar. 19 3/8" long, 7 3/4" wide and 3 3/8" high. A fine example from an old collection.
